Q&A: What type of bark collar should be used on a dachshund?

Question by Taylor M: What type of bark collar should be used on a dachshund?
My roommate has a 7 lbs dachshund that barks at every possible thing. Her parents gave her a bark collar and we are wondering if this would work on her. Its a PetSafe collar with a 6V battery.

Personally I wouldnt use a bark collar. I think they a cruel. Get a good dog trainer and use the rattle method every time the dog barks. Then at least the human is in control. Bark collars can cause lasting psycological damage.

I have never seen one work. I knew a lady who had one, and instead of barking he would growl instead. Not something great to hear.

There are collars that spray a harmless substance at your dog when she barks. Be aware that if you use a collar to train your dog not to bark, that is her way of alerting you to danger, and you will train her not to do that. Therefore, she may not alert you to an intruder in your house or yard, or imminent danger and the like. Think about this before you train her natural ways out of her.

The answer to your questions is NONE! Bark collars are inhumane and rarely solve the problem – and when they do they often bring a whole host of other issues to the fore instead.

Imagine you’re put on another planet and surrounded by aliens who don’t speak your language or understand your signals. You don’t know why, but they keep giving you painful electric shocks. You don’t know what to do, or why it keeps happening. Gradually the shocks get stronger and stronger because you’re apparently still doing something wrong – you still don’t know what. Eventually you probably retreat into yourself out of fear and frustration. You still don’t kow what the ‘right’ thing to do is. It’s pretty barbaric when you look at what it actually is, isn’t it?

Take the dog to a good training class that uses kind, positive methods and train her, instead of punishing her for doing what comes naturally.

With barkers, I quietly put them out of the room for a few seconds, then let them back in when quiet, and keep repeating. You may have to repeat this 50 or 100 times, but with patience and perseverence, she’ll get the idea.

With certain easily identifiable triggers (like when the doorbell rings), train her to lie down instead (and reward her for doing so) as it’s hard for dogs to bark when lying down. Also think about training her to hold a toy or chew, again, it’s not an activity compatible with barking.

    Good luck.
