URGENT! help identify bird species….pics included?

Question by Holly O: URGENT! help identify bird species….pics included?
help! I found a little bird in my backyard which has obviously fallen out of its nest. I have handled as little as possible (to ensure if the mother finds it she wont regect it) and have made it a little nest in a peg basket and hung it below the massive tree in which the nest obviously is. I have also attempted to give it some water.

Should the mother not find him, i would like to attempt to nurse the bird myself but first I need to identify the species of bird he is so I know what to feed him, etc.

Has anyone got any ideas from the below images. Please and Thankyou so much =]….xox

oh and no mean comments about how i look etc. I didnt even want to be in the pictures, im only doing this for the poor birdy.

The bird dosent have feathers yet, just small, very light brown hairs…he also has a black stripe at the end of his beak and was found in a big big tree in my backyard

Can’t tell, most the pics have focused on you so the birds out of focus.

    Hi,
To me, it looks more like a type of duck not a bird, maybe im wrong, i would waite around from a distance and see what comes to the nest to feed if theres any more around, if you found it in a nest i would suggest that u return it bcs the mother knows how and what to feed it ok.
    Your cute also!!

It’s a squab–a baby pigeon or dove, although it’s too early to tell which exactly. The big knobby beak is quite distinctive.

Don’t worry about how much you handle him, the idea that a mother bird will reject her offspring is just an old wives’ tale. Most birds have a terrible sense of smell and she will never even know the difference. I’ve had to handle lost fledglings many times over the years and it always ended in happy reunions between the babies and their mothers.

Unfortunately, this bird is quite young, and probably still needs special “pigeon’s milk” which mommy pigeons and doves make for their babies (it’s not related to mammalian milk, but is something created in the throat and regurgitated for the babies–birds can’t digest real milk).

My advice is to see if you can find an animal rescue facility, wildlife rehabilitation center or pigeon club in your area. Any of these places should be ready and willing to help you. I’ve included a link below which may help you find rehabbers in your area, although you can also try looking online or in your local phone book.

Best of luck to you and the little squab!

It’s a pigeon or a dove. Their young are called squabs.

This is a baby pigeon. Birds cannot ‘smell’ you anyway. Old man’s tale.

I raise pigeons and know the mother will take it back if you can find the nest.

Keep the baby warm in a box on a towel with a lightbulb over it. Find the nest. They are hard to hand raise as they put their beaks into the mother’s crop and suck the food out. You can tube feed it with Kaytee Exact Baby Bird Food or Google – wildlife rehabbers and click on your state.

    Keep it warm ~

The bird in your hand is a baby Dove or Pigeon and is about 8-10 days old.

The best thing for you to do is find a rescue centre they will take and rear it or tell you how too.
